Year 6

Welcome to Year 6

Class teacher: Mrs Forouzandeh

Our Topic: World at War
Our value this half-term: Generosity

Our Key Learnings for this week: WC 5th October 2026

English:

In English, we have started our new unit, Writing for Pleasure. The children are going to write a diary entry based on a personal experience or memory. To generate ideas, they began with some dabbling activities and discussion. Their diary entries can be happy, sad or funny, depending on an event or experience from their own lives.

Guided Reading:

For reading, the children have started reading Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian. They have had the opportunity to explore new vocabulary, enjoy reading together as a whole class and engage in peer and group discussions. These activities have helped them develop their prediction, inference and comprehension skills.  The children also improved their dictionary skills by finding new vocabulary in the text and creating their own sentences using the words.

Maths:

In Maths, the children have been learning how to do long multiplication and long division. They practised multiplying a 4-digit number by a 2-digit number using long multiplication and dividing 3-digit and 4-digit numbers by a 2-digit number using long division.  Please ensure that your child practises their times tables every day, as this is a crucial skill that supports learning across all areas of maths.

Design & Technology:

In DT, the children used a range of ingredients, including flour, butter, salt and water, to make their own pastry. They then developed their food preparation skills by using peelers and knives safely to peel and chop vegetables for their turnover pasties. The following day, the children tasted their finished products and evaluated them, considering what they liked about their pasties and how they could improve them in the future.

PE:

In PE, we focused on skills in football and basketball.

Science:

In Science, the children learnt about levers and fulcrums and investigated how the position of a force affects the effort needed to balance an object. They explored the idea that when a weight is moved further away from the fulcrum, less force or mass is needed to achieve balance. During a practical investigation, the children placed a 100 g weight on one side of a lever and used weights on the other side to balance it. As they moved the weight further away from the fulcrum, they found that they could gradually reduce the mass needed, removing 10 g at a time. This helped them develop their understanding of how levers can make lifting or moving objects easier by reducing the amount of force required.

Religious Education:

In RE, the children focused on the relationship between science and religion by discussing different viewpoints on evolution. They learnt about cosmology, which is the study of the universe and studied the Big Bang Theory and the Theory of Evolution. The children considered how scientific explanations and religious beliefs can sometimes differ and discussed the debates surrounding these ideas in a respectful and thoughtful way.
