    Welcome to Year 6

    Class teacher: Mrs Forouzandeh

    Our Topic: World at War
    Our value this half-term: Generosity

Our Key Learnings for this week:

    English:

This week, the children completed their extended writing by finishing their diary entries. They carefully edited their work and began publishing their final pieces. We also practised our spelling and focused on how to apply spelling rules in our writing. In addition, the children completed their spelling baseline assessment, which will help us identify areas of strength and targets for future learning.

    Guided Reading:

For reading, the children have started reading Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian. They have had the opportunity to explore new vocabulary, enjoy reading together as a whole class and engage in peer and group discussions. These activities have helped them develop their prediction, inference and comprehension skills.  The children also improved their dictionary skills by finding new vocabulary in the text and creating their own sentences using the words.

    Maths:

In Maths, children learnt how to add and subtract positive and negative numbers. They also explored factors and multiples and learnt to identify prime and composite numbers. In addition, they practised rounding numbers up to one million, developing their understanding of place value.

    Design & Technology:

In DT, the children began learning about turnovers during wartime in World War II. They explored a range of ready-made products, discussing the ingredients used and evaluating their taste and appearance. The children also had the opportunity to make a simple pastry using flour and butter, developing their understanding of the ingredients needed to create a turnover. Next week, they will design their own turnover and begin making it, using food preparation skills such as chopping vegetables and preparing pastry.

    PE:

In PE, we focused on dribbling skills in football, learning how to use the inside, outside, laces and sole of our feet to control and dribble the ball effectively.

    Science:

In Science, the children learned about different forces, including gravity, air resistance, friction and ground reaction force. They explored how these forces affect the movement of objects in everyday life. The children then carried out an experiment to test the effects of air resistance. Four children ran 50 metres both with and without a parachute while the class recorded and analysed the data. The results showed that the parachute increased air resistance, which pushed against the runner and slowed them down. This helped the children develop their understanding of how forces can affect speed and movement.

    Religious Education:

In RE, the children focused on the relationship between science and religion by discussing different viewpoints on evolution. They learnt about cosmology, which is the study of the universe and studied the Big Bang Theory and the Theory of Evolution. The children considered how scientific explanations and religious beliefs can sometimes differ and discussed the debates surrounding these ideas in a respectful and thoughtful way.
