We have been joined for the Autumn term by Mr Gurung who is a student teacher. He will be in school between 3 - 4 days each week.
Welcome back to school. We hope you have had a great summer full of lots of fun, family time and reading! We have a great term of fantastic learning planned and can't wait to share it with you all.
Fresh fruit is provided by the government for all children in Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2. The variety differs each day, so if your child would prefer something else then please feel free to send it to school.
If your child is staying for an after-school club, e.g. cookery, football, street dance or judo, then please send in a healthy snack for your child to enjoy before their club starts. If your child attends after-school care with usports then a healthy snack is provided.
Please see the curriculum bulletin for more information about the learning we will do this term.
Maths
Y1 – This week we ordered up to 10 objects, ordered numbers to 10, learnt about ordinal numbers (first, second, third etc) and used a number line from 0-10 to answer questions, e.g. what number comes before 5?
Next week we will match numerals and objects to their written name (eg. 5 - five). We will then move on to looking at parts and wholes, first with a single object, then with a quantity.
Y2 – This week we compared numbers within 100 and moved on to ordering and comparing numbers by looking at their tens value and then their ones. We counted in 2s, 5s and 10s then moved on to counting in 3s in preparation for learning times tables. We found the pattern of counting in 3s tricky so will revisit this regularly for fluency.
Next week we will consolidate our work on place value to ensure the children can apply their learning. We will then move on to our new unit on addition and subtraction, firstly recalling addition pairs that make 10 then revisit addition and subtraction fluency using concrete objects and known number facts.
Writing
This week we came together and had an 'ideas party' where we shared some of the activities that we like to do at the beach. We then came up with some class sentences to make our own book about a trip to the beach. We finished the week by creating our front covers and writing our first sentence.
Next week we will continue to add sentences to our 'My Beach Trip' books, focusing on letter formation, capital letters and full stops, and for the year 2 children, exclamation marks.
Phonics and Reading
Please see the link below for ideas and resources to support your child with their phonics.
Parent guide to Read Write Inc. Phonics - Oxford Owl
Reminder: Please keep reading at home every day and write in your reading record each time you read! Books will be changed on Mondays and Thursdays.
Science
This week we started our new science topic of materials. We looked at a variety of objects and named the materials they are made from, then came up with a range of adjectives to describe them.
Next week we will explore wooden items and their properties.
RE (Religious Education)
In RE, we learnt to recognise that the life of Jesus illustrates the character of God and explored and identified a miracle that shows God’s kindness.
Next week we will ask 'What do Christians do that reflect the character of God?'. We will then explore how Christians try to copy Jesus and show God’s love.
PE (Physical Education)
PE this term is focussed on football, basketball and Gymnastics. This week we continued to work on our football skills, dribbling and passing to each other. We will then play some games to pass the ball to each other at greater distances each time.
Next week we will have a go at using some of the skills we have been learning in fun games, incorporating teamwork too.
Big Picture
In DT we compared our sandwich to the design criteria and evaluated it, including what we would like to do next time to improve our sandwich.
Next week we will start our music topic. We will learn how to use our voices and start to learn some notes on the recorder. Please ensure you bring a named recorder into school on Monday 5th October.
