Our learning this week

Monday 15th April - Friday 19th April

History 

This week the children have been immersed in our learning all about Florence Nightingale, why she was famous, what job she did, how she helped others and also looked into the work of Mary Seacole-where the children used their knowledge of both women to think of the similarities and differences between the two. 

The children were very lucky to have a visit from 'Flo on the Road', who gave us an insight into the life of Florence Nightingale, how she cared for the sick and wounded soldiers and the changes she made to nursing for the better.

To end the week the children spent time using mint, ginger, honey and lemons, to make their own herbal remedies inspired by Mary Seacole.

Geography

In geography, the children went on a walk of the village to help them understand what landmarks and key features of the village there are. The children learnt the difference between physical and human features, and were able to sort photos that we took on our local walk into the correct group. Towards the end of the week, the children used their knowledge of the village to create their own maps of Knowl Hill and spent time learning about 'keys and symbols', which they were able to add to their maps to help others find landmarks more easily. 

The children were also lucky to have a visit from Lesley Bell, who is one of our school governors and told us more about herself, how she helps the community and the different jobs people do.
