Year 2

Welcome to year 2

Your teacher is Mrs De La Bertauche (Mrs D)

Your teaching assistants are Mrs Lancaster

 Our Topic: Frozen Kingdom

* Important notice*

We would like to kindly remind parents that the school car park is reserved for authorised staff and visitors who have received prior permission from Mrs Bourner. We have had a number of near misses recently caused by cars pulling into the entrance of the school car park to drop off and then pulling out again onto the A4. The A4 is a very busy road, it is important to set a good example to the children so please park sensibly and walk over the footbridge. There is plenty of parking at the village hall and it is only a short 1-2 minute walk from kiss and drop. Thank you.

Year 2 Weekly Update

This week has been full of excitement in Year 2, especially after our fantastic school trip to the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford! The children have been busy reflecting on their experience by writing detailed recounts in English. We are creating a class book all about our trip, carefully using time adverbials such as first, next, then, and finally to make sure our writing is in the correct sequence. The children have loved remembering every little detail—from getting on the coach in the morning to describing their favourite part of the day inside the museum. It has been wonderful to see them bringing the day to life through their writing.

In Maths, we have started an exciting new topic: measurement. This week we have been recapping our prior knowledge about height and length, learning how to measure objects using centimetres (cm) and comparing which objects are longer, shorter, taller, or smaller. The children have been practising using rulers and thinking carefully about accurate measurement. Next week, we will continue developing our understanding of measurement by exploring other areas of the Year 2 curriculum, including capacity and volume, where we will compare and measure how much different containers can hold.

In Art, we have begun our new topic on animal masks. We learnt that the Inuit people believe animals have spirits, and they create masks to celebrate and honour the spirits of the animals around them. The children explored the different features that make animal masks unique and then designed their own Arctic bear or walrus masks. We have started bringing these designs to life using clay, and the masks are already looking fantastic. We are very excited to continue shaping and finishing them next week!

In Science, we have continued learning about the seasons, focusing on Spring and the signs that show winter is coming to an end. The class discussed how we start to see new flowers blooming and signs of new life appearing all around us. We also learnt a fun song to help us remember the stages of how a flower grows—from a tiny seed to a beautiful bloom.

Alongside all of this, we have been practising our dance regularly in preparation for the Dance Extravaganza. The children have been working very hard and are getting more confident with their routine each day. We cannot wait to share their performance with you all in a couple of weeks!
